Abstract
1,226,143. Anodes having two-layer supporting separator wrappings. LEESONA CORP. 15 March, 1968 [30 March, 1967], No. 12670/68. Heading H1B. An anode for an electrochemical cell comprises a porous consumable metal body wrapped in a first layer, in contact with the metal, of a hydrophilic, gas impermeable, ion permeable material and a different second layer of a hydrophilic copolymer of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile, copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl alcohol, polyamide or polyacrylate ester. The metal may be e.g. Pb, Zn, Fe, Cd, Al or Mg, the first layer, e.g. a cellulosic material. In the example, the metal is Zn, containing 2 wt. per cent Hg, on a silver support screen, the first layer is an unglycerinated, desulphurized, fibrous cellulose, and the second layer is a bag of vinyl chloride/acrylonitrile copolymer. This anode is used in conjunction with an envelope air electrode having a layer of PTFE and Pt particles on a conductive support screen, backed by a PTFE membrane, in a zinc-air cell.
