Abstract

1,226,064. TiO 2 pigments. TITAN G.m.b.H. 15 April, 1969 [23 April, 1968], No. 19299/69. Heading C1N. Pigmentary TiO 2 coated with a condensed or uncondensed titanic acid ester of one or more polyhydric alcohols of formula where R 1 , R2, R 3 and R 4 are identical or dif- | ferent alkylene radicals -(CH 2 ) n -(n = 1 or 2) and X is H or OH. The ester may be added to the TiO 2 before or during grinding, in e.g. a roll, pin or jet mill, in an amount of 0À1-5% by wt. of TiO 2 . Pigmentary TiO 2 , anatase or rutile, made by diverse methods, is usable. In examples, TiO 2 samples containing added TiO 2 +Al 2 O 3 ŒSiO 2 , or Al 2 O 3 +SiO 2 , are mixed, before steam jet milling or grinding, with 0À25-1% of non-condensed titanic acid esters of 2,2 - bis - hydroxymethyl - propanediol - (1,3), 2 - methyl - 2 - hydroxymethyl - propanediol- (1,3) and condensed and uncondensed esters of 2,2 - bis - hydroxymethyl - butanol - (1). The products have improved dispersibility in plastics and lacquers.
