Abstract

1,225,423. Tuning arrangements. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. 27 March, 1968 [30 March, 1967], No. 14635/68. Heading H3Q. A tuning arrangement using a varicap diode which can be made conducting or non-conducting for band-switching is temperature compensated by a second varicap diode conducting when the first is non-conducting and vice versa, so that the capacitance variation of each varicap diode with temperature is compensated by that of the other conducting diode. Fig. 3 shows a transistor oscillator for a television receiver operating in Bands I and III. For Band III the switches S 1 -S 4 are as shown by the solid lines, tuning being effected by a potentiometer 4, 5, 6 across a regulated source 3 and an unregulated source 7. The resonant collector circuit consists of inductors 20, 21 connected in parallel by a conductive varicap diode 2, tuned by capacitor 22 and reverse-biased varicap diode 1. Feedback to the emitter occurs by capacitor 11 which forms a voltage divider with capacitor 13 and reversebiased varicap diode 12. For Band I the switches S 1 -S 4 are put in the dotted position where varicap diode 1 becomes conducting and short-circuits the inductor 21 and capacitor 22, leaving inductor 20 and reverse-biased varicap diode 2 to form the collector resonant circuit. At the same time varicap diode 12 becomes conducting so that the feedback potential divider comprises capacitors 11 and 13 only. Temperature variation of diode 1 (when reverse biased) is only serious at low voltages, i.e. when the slider of potentiometer 4 is at or near its lowest point. Since resistor 5 is of low value, variation of capacitance with temperature is compensated by a variation of its bias voltage due to variation of the voltage drop across the conductive diode 2. Resistors 14-19 are connected to other varicap diodes in the signal-frequency circuits of the receiver and these will be temperature compensated in a similar manner.
