Abstract

A magnetic structural toy comprises a plurality of elements including some straightsided elements such as cubes and some elements with curved surfaces such as spheres, each element including at least one bar magnet whereby selected elements can be held together by magnetic means to form bodies differing in shape and/or size and including both curvedsurfaced and straight-sided elements which could not be satisfactorily held together without the magnetic means. Many elements, e.g. rectangular blocks 1, 2 and 3 and sphere 4 have bar magnets (5, 6, 7 and 8 respectively) extending through them, the magnet ends being flush with the adjacent elemental surfaces. The elements are made from, e.g. wood or mouldable plastic, and the toy may also include an iron or steel plate 13 or strips of straight or curved lengths of steel or iron wire 11 having spheres 12 fixed to each end. A single bar magnet through each element may be replaced by two or more short bar magnets, e.g. spaced in grooves around the periphery of the element or disposed in alignment as at 9A. A box, formed of or lined with ferrous material may be provided for the elements.
