Abstract
1,224,908. Dictation machines. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 13 Dec., 1968 [19 Jan., 1968], No. 59289/68. Heading G5R. A dictation reproducer includes a "recall" mechanism whereby upon halting playback the head and record are automatically back-spaced ready to repeat the last few words when playback is restored. A magnetic belt 2 is slipped over a mandrel 11 and lever 10b moved leftwards to draw the belt into the machine over rollers 63, one of which is also shifted to tension the belt via linkage 50. Various latches 73, 74, 86 are also operated via link 60 to energize the motor to restore, via lead screw 100, the head carriage 103 to a "zero phase" position, determined by engagement of members 84, 84a of clutch 93, while the belt continues to be driven until a hole is sensed at 97 to stop the motor. If no hole is provided, the record is reversed and stops at the desired location (not detailed). During this time the head 82 is spaced from the belt by link 79 and is zeroed by lead screw 95 after removal of the previous belt (not detailed). Depressing the right of foot controller 8 engages forward drive of belt and carriage 103 via screw 100 and pawls (Fig. 3, not shown). When released, the motor automatically reverses to back-space the head 82 and belt over the last 0-5 words according to the setting of lever 19 which operates a movable stop 242 for a return biased rack 243 which, when solenoid T is energized, is driven by pinion 260 until it breaks contacts TC, thereby stopping the motor. Recall may be terminated by depressing controller 8 again to short-circuit the motor and to restore normal drive after a short delay. Depression of the left or top of controller 8 respectively reverses or advances the system over 10 or 20 words, according to the position of switch 27a, as a single or succession of steps. The machine auto-stops at the end of play and is restarted by moving the head carriage via lever 16a associated with an index slip 15a. Speed, tone and volume controls 22, 29, 31 are provided and the belt may be erased via control 40a, automatically stopping at the end of erasure. The audio amplifier is muted during non-transducing operations.
