Abstract

1,224,318. Lasers. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 27 June, 1968 [30 June, 1967], No. 30429/67. Heading HlC. In a Q-switched laser which produces an output of narrow spectral width, a dichroic crystal active medium 1, e.g. ruby, is pumped by a helical xenon flash tube 2 and is located between flat external reflectors 3, 4, Q-switching being effected by a Pockel's cell 5, while the spectral width is reduced by a birefringent plate 6 which functions as a frequency filter. The Pockel's cell is normally electrically stressed so as to be a #/4 plate forming a Q-spoiling element, a giant pulse occurring when the stress potential is removed. The birefringent plate may be a calcite plate the optic axis of which is oriented at 45 degrees to the optical axis of the ruby or other dichrioc crystal active medium. In operation, plane polarized light is emitted by the active medium and is converted into arbitrary elliptical polarization by the birefringent plate, except for those wavelengths for which the difference in optical path for the ordinary and extraordinary ray is an integral multiple of a wavelength. Due to multiple passes in the resonator, the birefringent plate 6 is equivalent to a Lyot filter with all birefringent elements equal.
