Abstract

122,430. Bain, T., and Morgan, L. Jan. 7, 1918. Safety cut-off valves.-In an inflating life-saving costume of the type provided with a number of inflatable chambers or tubes, and fitted with valves for automaticallv isolating a defective chamber or tube, the valve-mechanism shown in Fig. 14 is employed. Each valve is mounted between the walls a<4> of two adjacent air-tubes. The valve casing is cylindrical, and is fitted at each end with a flap valve a<5>, the two valves a<5> being normally held open, against the inward pull of a spiral spring a<6> acting through connecting rods a<7>, by spring- pressed triggers a<2> hinged to the ends of a transverse sliding rod a<1>. This rod is engaged by a swinging rod a<8> hinged to the valve casing, and, during inflation of the tubes, or under equal pressure in both tubes, it remains in central position. If, however, one of the tubes is punctured &c , the excess of pressure in the other tube forces the rod a<1> towards the deflated tube, and disengages the trigger on the pressure side, so allowing the corresponding valve to close under the pressure of the air in the inflated tube, aided by the pull of the spring a<6>, and thereby isolating the defective tube.
