Pile fabrics.-Terry fabrics of the kind in which the loops are formed by beating-up the wefts to different positions have the terry warps arranged in pairs or groups of adjacent threads, each pair or group forming loops on one side at one time and the adjacent pairs or groups forming loops on the other side at the same time, and the loops formed by each pair or group being of different heights, while, as nearly as possible, a plain weave surrounding the loops is formed by the ground warps. Thus, pairs a, b and a', b<1> of adjacent terry warps form loops alternately on opposite sides of the fabric and the loops of the threads a, a<1> are formed over and under three wefts g, while those of the threads b, b<1> are formed over and under two wefts, so that the terry warp threads have between them at one side of the loops a weft which is gripped more firmly if these threads are pulled and thus locks the loops. The fabrics can be woven in a one-shuttle loom; or the wefts gripped by the terry warps may be thicker or thinner than, or otherwise different from, the other wefts.
