Abstract
1,222,875. Discharge apparatus. MACHLETT LABORATORIES Inc. 31 May, 1968 [16 June, 1967], No. 26300/68. Heading HID. A filamentary cathode structure, e.g. for a high power tube, comprises two spaced apart decks 60, 61 which are rigidly connected together and insulated from each other by arrangement 63, see also Fig. 5 (not shown), between which the cathode is supported, a first elongate conductive member 71 extending from deck 60 to a first terminal 74 and a second elongate conductive member 78 which is connected to deck 61 and which is coaxial with and connected to a second terminal 84, 85 by a series of corrugated annular diaphragms 80 to permit relative movement therebetween. The diaphragms 80 extend across the annular space between tubular member 84 of the second terminal to provide parallel paths for the current flow therebetween. The cathodes are U-shaped wires 42 having a free end connected to each of decks 60, 61 and the bight of the U is secured to arms extending from resilient disc 35, see also Fig. 3 (not shown). A further pair of plates 43, 44 insulated from each other, are provided with U-shaped wire straps 49, 50 connected to alternate filament wires 42 to prevent them from making contact with a coaxially disposed helical grid 22 mounted on supports 21 outside cylindrical cathode 42 by the buckling and bowing thereof. As shown, cylindrical member 71 connected to terminal 74 at one end is castellated at the other end so as to extend through slots in deck 61 to be attached to deck 60, see Fig. 7 (not shown), and coaxial cylindrical member 78 supporting deck 61 is attached at its other end to the inner periphery of annular diaphragms 80, the outer edges of which are connected to the tubular member 84 of the second cathode terminal.
