Abstract

A drive means for reaper cutter mechanisms having at least one reciprocating reaper blade comprises at least one drive lever mounted to pivot about a vertical axis, the said lever being connected to the blade head and being set in reciprocating motion by means of a drive device and is characterized in that the connection between the drive lever and the blade moved thereby is in the form of a play free joint including a bearing piece constituting the connection to the blade with the axis of the joint being parallel with the pivot axis and the drive lever actuating the blade head and resiliently pressing it towards the back up blade serving as a support. A reaper cutter drive mechanism, Fig. 1, comprises an upper reciprocating blade 1 whose head 2, Fig. 3, is held in a bearing piece 3 by an adjusting bolt 4. A drive lever 10, Fig. 2, pivotable about the vertical axis 11 is hinged to the bearing piece by means of a spring loaded pin 5 which is either integral with or pressed into the bearing piece so that the hinge axis is parallel to the pivot axis. A crank arm 13 driven by a crankshaft 15, Fig. 1, engages with the other end of the drive lever 10 through a pivot pin 14. Also mounted to pivot about pin 11 and serving to drive the lower blade 21 is an additional drive lever 19 driven by the crankshaft 15. In a second embodiment, Fig. 8, a constant pressure between the blades is effected by means of a spring 39 acting on the forward member of lever 10 which is articulated between the pivot pin 11 and hinge pin 5 about a horizontal axis hinge joint 37 (not shown) and by locating the drive centrally of the cutter 5 which is connected by ball joints, the cutter can side over irregularities aligned with the direction of motion of the reaper. Further drive arrangements are described and illustrated. In each cutter the outer arrangements are described and illustrated. In each cutter the outer most teeth of the upper and lower blades respectively are longer than the other teeth to compensate for the partial covering of the normal cutting area by the drive parts which results in a larger amount of crop being fed to these teeth, and the cutter drive mechanism is located at one side of the cutter in a shoe which serves as the drive housing.
