Abstract
1,222,651. Moulding processes and moulds; continuous casting. FORDATH Ltd. 15 March, 1968 [30 Dec., 1966], No. 58257/66. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions Cl and C3] A casting die part (e.g. for a die casting machine), mould, mould part, feeder head, sleeve, slab, or tile for covering a poured ingot and possibly porous, e.g. for venting, comprises a filler material F bonded by a carbon skeleton, made by coating F with a resin R, moulding, and carbonizing R by heating at 800-850‹ C. in an atmosphere containing hydrocarbon vapour V which is cracked with the deposition of carbon in the pores of the material. F is refractory and does not undergo a physical or chemical change when heated to 850‹ C. F and V are preferably free of iron. V may be benzene contained in an atmosphere of N 2 . The moulding may be performed by hand-ramming. R may be a phenolic novolac, a resole, a furfuryl-alcohol/formaldehyde polymer, a furfurylated phenol-formaldehyde, a urea-formaldehyde, or a urethane resin. R may be a phenolic resin mixed with a di-isocyanate; curing may be effected by passing a mixture of air and triethylamine into the mould. The moulded article may be impregnated with a resin solution or furfuryl alcohol before carbonization, thus increasing the thermal conductivity and strength, useful for continuous-casting dies. F may be particulate, e.g. ZrO 2 and/or Al silicate with or without graphite. F may include a fibrous refractory, e.g. asbestos, Al 2 O 3 , slag wool or Al silicate.
