1,222,186. Removal of hydrocarbons from hydrogen. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 10 March, 1969, No. 12383/69. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C5] The hydrocarbon-containing H 2 stream from the hydroprocessing of a hydrocarbon oil is purified by a process which includes mixing it with the hot reactor gases from the non-catalytic partial combustion, optionally with steam and/ or CO 2 of a mineral oil. Hydroprocessing means hydro-cracking, -finishing, -desulphurization, and hydrogenation, and includes catalytic reforming, and the H 2 stream may be delivered to the partial combustion stage or preferably be mixed with the reactor gases after they have left that stage, e.g. in a carburetter. Partial combustion may be carried out as described in Specification 851,542, the H 2 stream being added to the reactor gases before they enter the waste heat boiler. The mineral oil fraction may be liquid or gaseous and may include the residue from a deasphalting step, in which the deasphalted oil forms the feed to the hydro-process, see Fig. 2 (not shown). The mixed gas may be subjected to conventional CO-conversion and purification steps, and final H 2 recycled to the hydroprocessing stage. In another embodiment, see Fig. 3, the initial H 2 stream 20 comes from a catalytic reformer 19, and the final purified H 2 21 is passed to a catalytic hydrocracker 22 which produces a contaminated H 2 stream 23 which may be sent directly to the partial combustion stage 8 or first mixed with the stream 20.
