Abstract

1,221,822. Flame retardant composition. BAKELITE XYLONITE Ltd. 23 Jan., 1968 [10 Oct., 1967], No. 3430/68. Headings C3B, C3C and C3P. A flame retardant composition for use with polymeric materials comprises a halogen containing flame retardant and a substituted diphenyl ethane that will generate free radicals at 50‹ to 250‹ C. and has the general formula in which R 1 to R4 are hydrogen or an alkyl group, at least two of R 1 to R 4 being alkyl groups, and in which the benzene residues A and B may contain substituents. The polymeric material may be a polyolefin, a polyester, a polyamide, or polystyrene, an unsaturated polyester or epoxide resin. The Specification contains lists of substituted diphenyl ethanes and halogen containing flame retardants, the latter embracing ammonium bromide, or an organic compound containing a plurality of halogen atoms in an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aryl radical, or a halogen containing polymer or copolymer. In the polymeric composition containing the flame retardant composition, the halogenated flame retardant is preferably used in an amount of 2 to 15% by weight of the total composition, and the substituted diphenyl ethane in an amount from 0À25 to 2% by weight. In the examples, polystyrene granules are compounded with 3,4-diphenyl 3,4-dimethyl hexane and a halogen containing flame retardant selected from a brominated terpene, ammonium bromide, or a chlorinated paraffinic hydrocarbon. The mixtures are compounded and extruded. In other examples, (1) polypropylene granules are mixed with hexa-bromocyclododecane and 3,4-dimethyl 3,4-diphenyl hexane, (2) carbon tetrabromide and 3,4-dimethyl 3,4-diphenyl hexane are mixed with a composition comprising an epoxide resin and a polyamide hardener, (3) an unsaturated polyester resin is mixed with carbon tetra-bromide, 3,4-dimethyl 3,4-diphenyl hexane, optionally chlorinated wax, antimony oxide and a silicic acid, the compositions so formed being cured with cobalt naphthenate and methyl ethyl ketone peroxides.
