Abstract

1,221,571. Pressure-sensitive copying sheets. CHAMPION PAPER CO. Ltd. 5 Aug., 1968, No. 37261/68. Heading D2B. [Also in Division B8] Transfer sheet materials are produced by coating paper or similar sheet material with an aqueous suspension of a microencapsulated printing ink, particularly colourless lenco dye intermediates, which has been prepared by mixing with brisk agitation on oily solution of the ink, water, and a solution of a hydrophobic, thermoplastic resin in a water- and oilmisci!ble organic solvent from which the resin precipitates on dilution with water so that the resin forms a coating about a nucleus of the oil. Suitable resins, solvents, resin stabilisers and emulsifiers are described in Specification 1,221,489, 37260/68, the emulsifier being added after formation of the microcapsules. A further coating of the same or another resin may be formed by adding a second solution. The inks to be encapsulated are dissolved in oils, e.g. cottonseed, castor, soybean, petroleum lubricating, fish liver, drying or essential oils, methyl salicylate, halogenated biphenyls or low melting fats or waxes, e.g. lard, sperm oil or lanolin; an inhibitor, e.g. N-phenyl 2-naphthylamine may be included, and a buffer material is preferably added to maintain the aqueous phase alkaline. Dispersions of the microencapsulated colourless inks in water with a binder material are applied to one side of paper to form a transfer sheet. The copy sheet is an adsorbent acidic electron-acceptor material so that when dye from the transfer sheet is applied by rupture of the capsules by pressure, the dye is converted to a visible form.
