Rollers.-In pneumatic rollers of the kind having fluid under pressure contained between an outer flexible covering and the mandrel, the space between the mandrel and the covering is occupied by a cellular or porous material, such as rubber sponge, attached to the mandrel and the covering. As shown in Fig. 1, the porous material consists of a single mass 3 vulcanized to the mandrel 1 and a canvas cover 2, and an outer fixed or detachable sheath 4 of india-rubber has its ends secured in an air-tight manner to collars 5. French chalk, black lead, fuller;s earth, &c. may be introduced between the sheath 4 and the cover 2, and the sheath may be adapted to rotate relatively to the cover. The porous material may consist of longitudinal strips, a helical strip, or washers. A bore, such as 9, is provided for the circulation of air through the porous material. In another form, the porous material 3, Fig. 6, is wholly enclosed in a covering 8 of india-rubber.
