Abstract

1,220,609. Piezo-electric generators. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 22 March, 1968 [25 March, 1967; 27 April, 1967; 13 June, 1967; 15 June, 1967], No. 14014/68. Heading H2A. In a piezo-electric spark generator, Figs. 2 and 3, pressure on a push-button 3 compresses a spring 10 against a striker 9 having a crosspin 11 located in bayonet slots 15 in an enclosure 1 for the piezo-element 2. The pin 11 passes through apertures 14 in the push button having cam faces 13, which as the spring 10 is compressed, rotate the pin 11 against rotational bias imparted by spring 10 until it releases from the parts 15<SP>1</SP> of slots 15 and allows the striker to impinge on the element 2. A return spring 7 is provided for the push-button. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 7, the push-button 28 surrounds the enclosure 17 for piezo-element 18 and has notches 30b in which the cross-pin 24b on the striker 19 locate. Pressure on the pushbutton against return spring 29 presses the striker 19 against a spring 21 until cam slots 22a, 22b in the enclosure rotate the cross-pin and release it from notches 30b. Fig. 8 shows a further modification in which rotation of an operating member 44 against a spring 47 moves the striker cross-pin 42 along slots 43 against a spring (41) until it is released by the ends of member 44 passing over it. On return of member 44, cam faces 51 thereon ride over the cross-pin by pressing it against the rotational bias of spring (41) into the vertical parts of slots 43. The generator may be used in a gas lighter and having a pair of piezo-elements enclosed in a synthetic resin case with limited freedom of movement so that none of the striker impact force is absorbed by the case, Figs. 12- 15 (not shown). A high voltage lead extends from the centre of the case and may be highly resistive or resistor elements may be incorporated in the case.
