Abstract

1,220,067. Typewriters. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 15 Aug., 1968 [17 Aug., 1967[, No. 37850/67. Heading B6F. In a typewriter, the number of words typed is counted by apparatus which senses a character print operation followed by a word space or line space and carriage return operation, or vice versa. In a first embodiment, a manuallyoperated typewriter includes microswitches 8, 9, 10 operated by a carriage return and linespace lever 1, type levers (not shown), and a space bar 7 respectively. The switch 9 acts to set a bi-stable (12), Fig. 2, not shown, to a first output condition, the switches 8, 10 acting to reset the bi-stable to a second output condition. A one-slot generator (13) detects the change from the first to the second condition and transmits a pulse to a counter (14) whenever such a change occurs. In alternative embodiments (not shown), further microswitches may be included to take into account back-spacing and other operations, or the apparatus may be applied to an electrically operated typewriter.
