Abstract

1,219,112. Surface deformation imaging. RANK XEROX Ltd. April 25, 1968 [April 27, 1967J, No.19667/68. Heading G2H. In a surface deformation imaging process a deformable thermoplastic layer has a thin film of higher viscosity material having a thickness of up to 0À05 microns formed on one surface, an electrostatic latent image is formed on the film, the plate is heat softened to form a surface deformation image, and this image is erased and subsequent ghost images prevented by heating the plate to a temperature at least 1À5 times the softeningtemperature. The thin film may be formed in situ by exposure to U. V radiation, X-rays, beta or gamma rays, high voltage or corona discharge or chemical treatment, or by deposition of a second material e.g. by spraying, dip-coating or painting the thermoplastic layer. The thermoplastic layer may overlie a photo-conductive layer, in which case the latent image is formed by uniform corona charging, imagewise exposure to an original and uniform recharging. The recharging step may be omitted if photo-conductive material is dispersed throughout the thermoplastic, and if the photo-conductive material is omitted, the thermoplastic is charged in imagewsie configuration, e.g. by using a shaped electrode. The thermoplastic may be non-polymeric e.g. esters of abietic and related acids, or polymeric e.g. polystyrene, copolymers of styrene, indene polymers, vinyl polymers or polyesters.
