Abstract

1,218,551. Variable sweep wings. AVIONS MARCEL DASSAULT. 9 June, 1967 [29 June, 1966], No. 26834/67. Heading B7G. The openings B provided in the sides of the fuselage 1 of a variable geometry aircraft to accommodate the wings 2 when in the retracted position are each closed by upper and lower shutters having leading edges 20, 43 which bear on the upper and lower surfaces of the wing when the wing is retracted, as shown in Fig. 8, and which are moved to touch one another and close the opening as shown by the dash-line position A when the wing is extended. The upper shutter comprises a number of parallel, spaced, channel-section blades 11 extending in the direction of the fore-aft axis of the aircraft and pivotally secured at intervals to transverse crosspieces 12. Each pivot consists of a rod 14 having a head 13 welded to a blade 11, the rod extending through a bush mounted in a boss 15 of a crosspiece 12. The exterior surface of the shutter is formed by closely-spaced strip 18 secured to the blades 11, the leading edge of the shutter being formed by a rubber lip 19 with a bead 20 of "Teflon" (Trade Mark). The lower shutter comprises a single channel-section blade 11a pivotally secured at intervals by pivots 38 to arms 39 pivoted about an axis 40. Each arm 39 is biased by a spring 41 to move the shutter to the closed position. Secured to the strip 11a are a strip 42 and "Teflon" bead 43. Preferably, the lower shutter is subdivided lengthwise to allow it to conform more readily to the curved lower surface of the wing. Each crosspiece 12 of the upper shutter is pivotally connected to a respective plate 21 by a pivot 22 and by a link 23, whereby the crosspiece is both carried by and may be moved by the plate. Each plate 21 is guided by followers 28 in arcuate slots 27 in members 26 fixed to the fuselage and is pivotally connected by a link 35 to a lever arm 34. The arm 34 is pivoted about a fixed pivot 33 and is rigid with a cranked lever arm 32 pivotally connected to a rod 31. A spring 30 exerts a thrust on the rod 31 to move the upper shutter to the closed position. To open the shutter the foremost arms 34, 39 are connected to hydraulic actuators 50, 51, respectively. The piston 50a of actuator acts against a spring 30 and the piston 51a of actuator 51 acts against a spring 41a. Spring 41a is substituted for the spring 41 of Fig. 3, the piston 51a acting on an arm 39a rigid with an arm 39.
