Abstract

[Also in Division G1] A communication system comprises a radiofrequency transmitter and receiver, conversion means for frequency modulating a laser beam with the received information and for projecting the laser beam, at least one station for receiving the laser beam and detecting the information, and communication lines for connecting the station output to local utilisation apparatus The system is applied to distributing a television programme particularly using laser transmission from a high city building to adjacent buildings. The system may transmit a pilot whereby the system is switched to substitute an R.F. television transmission system for the laser system in the event of excessive light absorption during fog, smog, or heavy rain. The beams may be expanded to prevent burn damage and may be transmitted in a number of directions, or a single beam may be tapped at a succession of receivers which reflect or retransmit the beam. The modulating element 27, Fig. 7, which may be a Pockels cell of lithium tantalate is included as an element in a Colpitts oscillator, the frequency of which is determined by a varactor 26t acted on by the information input at 30. The laser may have a Brewster's Angle termination 35 from which the beams modulated in their passage between mirrors 34a and 34b are transmitted. Alternatively a laser beam may have its output polarized by a Rochon Prism and the polarization may be rotated.
