1,218,413. Oxychlorination process. PRODUITS CHIMIQUES PECHINEY - SAINTGOBAIN. 17 May, 1968 [19 May, 1967], No. 23671/68. Heading C2C. 1,2 - Dichloroethane, 1,1,2 - trichloroethane and 1,1,2,2 - tetrachloroethane are produced simultaneously by oxychlorination of ethylene, in a continuous process that comprises passing a gaseous mixture containing ethylene, hydrogen chloride and molecular oxygen, the molar ratios HCl/C 2 H 4 and O 2 /C 2 H 4 being from 1À8 to 3À0 and from 0À5 to 1À5 respectively, through adjacent or separated first and second zones comprising one or more tubular or multitubular devices and containing fixed bed catalysts, the diameter of the tubes of the second zone being greater than the diameter of the tubes of the first zone, the temperature of the warmest region in the first zone being from 250‹ to 400‹ C. and the temperature of the warmest region in the second zone being from 5‹ to 50‹ C. higher than that of the warmest region in the first zone but lying within the range 255‹ to 410‹ C. A fraction of the reactants may be supplied directly to the second reactor in the form of a gas comprising one or more of them. Specified catalyst supports are alumina, silica, silicates, clays, aluminosilicates, magnesia and graphite. Vinyl chloride and/or other chlorinated ethylenes may be produced as by products.
