Abstract

121,828. Ferranti, S. Z. de. Jan. 9, 1918. Forging-dies.-In forging shell and like hollow bodies by placing a heated billet within a cylindrical die closed at one end and forcing a bluntnosed mandrel axially into the billet, the composite die is arranged so that the inner hard cast iron member 3 is supported axially in a steel sleeve 2, which may be tapered or provided with a shoulder at the bottom, by a ring 4 screwed into the sleeve or secured by nuts and bolts. In the construction shown, the die is mounted to move axially in a chamber 1 forming a jacket space 5 through which cooling-fluid is circulated. The sleeve 2 is gilled or serrated and is strengthened by rings 9 shrunk on. Grooves 10 are provided on one or both surfaces of the rings 9 and sleeve 2. Packing-rings 13, 14 are provided between the sleeve 2 and chamber 1. In a modification, the die and chamber are bolted down to the same base.
