A skipping rope comprises a length of rope and a pair of handles at least one of which is hollow and is adapted to adjustably store amounts of the rope, to vary its length, the handle being provided with storing to store rope contained within the handle. In Fig. 2 the skipping rope comprises a length of rope 10, a pair of hollow handles 11 (only one shown) for holding the rope, and removably located in each handle, a spool 12. Each handle has an elongate grip part 13 and a knob part 14 detachably connected thereto by means of threaded cavity 16 which mates with the threaded open end 15 of grip member 13. An annular ring 17 prevents knob 14 screwing on too far. Spool 12 is snugly housed in cylindrical chamber 18 in the handle. The spool has a main flat strip part 20, rounded at one end, and integral fins 22 and 23 centrally disposed and at right angles to, opposite faces of strip 20. The end edges of strip 20 and fins 22, 23 (opposite to the rounded end of 20) are concave in shape. When fully inserted in chamber 18, the rounded end of spool 12 projects beyond end 15 of nip member 13, and is accommodated in and retained by threaded aperture 16 in knob 14. Rope 10 is attached by staple 26 through hole 21 to spool 12 and is wound round the projecting fins (see fig. 2) until the required length is stored. The free end passes through chamber 16 of knob 14 and a smaller hole 19 (fig. 1 not shown) diametrically opposite 16, and thence to the other handle. The spool may be adapted to fit only one way, into chamber 18, in which case the length of rope can be varied by multiples of twice the length of spool 12, or can fit in either way, when the rope length can be varied by the length of spool 12 or multiples thereof.
