Abstract

1,217,372. Triaxle bogies. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 26 June, 1969 [29 June, 1968; 19 Oct., 1968], Nos. 31202/68 and 49699/68. Heading B7L. A vehicle suspension system, e.g. for rail vehicle bogies comprises a load supporting body 1 supported on three axles (only two of which 3, 4, are shown) by means of four rigid levers 2, one end of each lever being resiliently mounted on each axle box 10 of the two end axles, the other end of each lever being resiliently mounted on the adjacent axle box 7 of the central axle 4, each lever being pivotally connected at 15 to the body structure 1 so as to be capable of pivoting with respect to the vehicle body about a horizontal axis. Housings 6, 9 are arranged around each axle box 7, 10, and are held in position by a pair of " chevron " springs 8, 11, 12 each comprising V-shaped rubber blocks interposed between and bonded to V-shaped metal plates. Each housing 9 on the end axles 3 is formed integrally with its associated lever 2 which comprises two metal plates, Fig. 2 (not shown), extending normally to the axles 3, 4, each arm being pivoted to lugs 14 extending downwards from the supporting structure 1 by means of a rubber bushed bolt 15. The arms 13 are secured to the central axle box housing 6 by means of single rubber block " chevron " spring 16. The position of the pivot 15 on each arm 2 is chosen to give the desired load distribution between the axles 3, 4. To reduce rocking and tilting of the central axle box housing 6, longitudinal link members 19 are pivoted by means of rubber bushed pins 20, 21, to the central axle housing 6 and the adjacent lever arms 2 respectively, the links 19 lying in the horizontal plane passing through the axles. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the " chevron " springs 16 and associated abutment surfaces on the arms 2 and axle box housing 6 are inclined to the horizontal plane when considered in a cross-sectional plane normal to the axles so that the loads applied to the axle box housing 6 by the arms 2 act substantially radially with respect to the central axle, reducing the tendency for the central axle to tilt under braking torque, and enabling the length of the wheel base of the bogie to be reduced. The bogie is attached to a vehicle body by means of a central bushed king pin pivot, Fig. 2 (not shown).
