Abstract

1,217,244. Halogen- or phosphorus-containing polyester graft copolymers. HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP. 11 Jan., 1968, No. 1719/68. Headings C3G, C3P and C3R. A graft copolymer of (1) from 20% to 95% by weight of the total weight of components (1) and (2), of a polymerizable compound containing aliphatic carbon-to-carbon unsaturation; and (2) a halogen- or phosphorus-containing polyester derived from a polycarboxylic compound and a polyhydric alcohol or phenol, the polyester comprising a maximum of 5 molar per cent of polycarboxylic and/or polyhydric component that contain aliphatic carbon-tocarbon unsaturation. "Polycarboxylic compound" means polycarboxylic acid, anhydride, acid halid or ester and "halogen" means fluorine, dilorine or bromine. In the examples polyesters are prepared from ethylene glycol, chlorendic acid, tetrachlorophthalic anhydride, tetrabromophthalic anhydride, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, hexachlorooctahydro - 5,8- methano - 2,3 - naphthalene dicarboxylic anhydride, fumaric acid, maleic anhydride, 1,4- butanediol, diethylene glycol, monoalkyl-ether of trimethylol propane, neopentyl glycol, propylene glycol, acetic acid, trimethyl phosphite, triethyl phosphite, tributyl phosphite, bis(# - chloroethyl) phosphite, bis(chloropropyl) phosphite and ethylene chlorophosphite. The resulting polyesters are graft copolymerized with styrene, acrylonitrile, α methyl styrene, methyl methacrylate and methacrylonitrile in the presence of water, dioctylsulphosuccinate, diammonium phosphate and calcium chloride (giving bicalcium phosphate), benzoyl peroxide and hydrochloric acid. The copolymers are compounded with antimony broxide and stabilizers. Graft copolymers of polybutadiene, styrene and acrylonitrile are prepared and these or a butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer are blended with the polyester copolymers and antimony broxide, a liquid bisphenol - epichlorohydric epoxy resin, the reaction product of biphenyl phosphite, pentaerythritol and bisphenol A, polyethylene wax, dibutyl tin carboxylate, zinc sulphide and dibutyl peroxide. Polymer compositions are also prepared by emulsion and suspension polymerization of styrene, α-methyl styrene, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile on to mixtures of polyesters and polybutadiene or styrene-butadiene copolymer in the presence of water, dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate, diammonium phosphate, ammonia, calcium chloride, benzoyl peroxide, dodecyl mercaptan, di-butyl p-cresol, polyvinyl alcohol and potassium persulphate.
