Abstract

In a reel-to-reel tape transport, the detection of a predetermined amount of slack in the tape between the reels causes a one-way lock to engage the supply hub and lock it against forward rotation, in order to prevent tape spillage during carriage. As shown, a compliance arm 20, 152 controls a speed-governing brake band 144 and, at a predetermined amount of tape slack, locks the supply hub against forward rotation by the engagement of a pawl 178 with a ratchet 180. A resilient joint 185 allows the compliance arm to take up even further slack. The take-up hub is prevented from reverse rotation by a similar arrangement or by a one-way clutch. Instead of the pawl-and ratchet, the hub-lock may use a wedging action between high-friction surfaces (200, 202, Fig. 9). The video tape recorder described uses helical scan, coaxial reels and two capstans.
