Abstract

1,215,943. Dimerizing olefins. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 26 Aug., 1968 [7 Nov., 1967], No. 50491/67. Addition to 1,069,296. Heading C5E. Olefins are dimerized in the presence of a catalyst prepared by (a) contacting a silica gel containing surface hydroxyl groups capable of ionizing and exchanging, or a material containing such silica gel, with an aqueous ionic solution of a salt of aluminium whereby ions are incorporated on the oxide surface, (b) contacting the oxide, before or after step (a), with an aqueous solution containing nickel ions to incorporate nickel on the oxide surface, and (c) activating the products of steps (a) and (b) by heating in a stream of inert gas, e.g. N 2 . The dimerization of propylene is exemplified.
