A device for automatic analysis of liquid samples, for example serum samples obtained by centrifuging blood samples in flexible tubes 14 supported in belt 12 movable on drums 13 comprises a belt 1 carrying flexible "working" tubes 2 and movable at right angles to the length of the tubes, press buttons 17 arranged in rows parallel to the tubes, means for moving each press button to press a portion of a working tube against a corresponding stationary member 18 (Fig. 3) to cause movement of the liquid along the tube, a second movable belt 7 carrying flexible tubes 9 containing auxiliary liquids for the analysis and means 10 for displacing the tubes to positions adjacent to the working tubes 2, each tube 9 having a needle 11 for injection of the auxiliary liquid into a working tube. In operation, serum is taken from a tube 14 into a working tube 2 through needle 5. At the same time sample information in the form of coded perforations in space 16 adjacent to the tubes 14 is read and transferred to the corresponding space 4 on belt 1 by punching the belt. Belt 7 may also carry coded perforations; movement of the belts 12, 1, 7 is controlled by a programming device reading the information on them. Belt 7 is moved so that a reagent tube 9 can be moved over the working tube by pin 10. Needle 11 is forced into the working tube 2 and reagent is sucked into the tube 2 by operation of buttons 17. The liquid in tube 2 may be filtered through sintered glass filter 6 by operating buttons 17. A reagent tube 9 may have two or more chambers containing different reagents in glass ampoules (95) (Fig. 2 not shown). These can be broken and the required quantities of each mixed by applying pressure to the reagent tube; the prepared reagent is then transferred to a working tube 2. There is reference to colorimetric determination of glucose using a farri-ferro cyanide reagent.
