Abstract
1,215,742. Bookbinding W. KOLBUS, and U. HEITMANN, [trading as RAHDENER MASCHINENFABRIK AUGUST KOLBUS]. 12 March, 1968 [18 March, 1967], No. 12067/68. Heading B6A. Book signatures, book blocks or the like 11 are conveyed through a multi-stage spine nipping unit 2, each stage exerting a greater pressure than the preceding stage, and a whole surface smashing unit 3. The books &c. are fed by a conveyer 1 to rest against a stop 13 which intermittently permits a book to pass on to a further conveyer 5 whereon the book is pushed by a rod 8 connecting parallel conveyer chains 7 to the spine nipping station 2. The spine nipping is effected by projecting bars 19, 20, 21, Fig. 2, mounted on horizontally reciprocable pressure members 17, the bars projecting by progressively increasing amounts. Resiliently mounted pressure pads (18), Fig. 3 (not shown), hold the books steady in a spine nipping position. The book sections may be jogged at the first spine nipping position 14, or before entering the spine nipping unit, by vibrator rollers 22. After the final spine nipping position 16 the book is passed between pressure plates 9 of the whole surface smashing unit 3. The pressure members 17 may be pneumatically or hydraulically actuated.
