Abstract
1,215,696. Semi-bright tin electro-plate. E. I. DU PONT DE NUMOURS & CO. Nov. 30, 1967 [Nov 30, 1966], No.54548/67. Heading C7B. Semi-bright additive compositions for halogen tin electro-plating baths which compositions yield clear solutions on thawing from a frozen state comprise by weight 5 to 20% of thiourea; 5 to 45% of a polyalkylene oxide of M.W. 600 to 20, 000; and 35 to 90% of a mixture consisting of a glycol alkyl ether and water in a weight ratio of from 1: 8 to 5:1. Typically the polyalkylene oxide is a polyethylene oxide or a mixture of such compounds and the glycol ether is the monomethyl or monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol. The tin electro-plating bath comprises an aqueous acid solution containing stannous chloride, sodium fluoride, sodium chloride and sodium bifluoride together with a small amount of sodium ferrocyanide to inhibit fluo-stannate sludge formation and is employed at about 140 F. Semi-bright deposits are obtained over a range of 2À5 to 150 ASF on hydrochloric acid-pickled steel plates from baths containing the additive composition in such concentration as to provide 0À1 to 5 g/l thiourea and up to 25 g/l of polyalkylene oxide.
