Abstract

1,215,425. Winding stators, coiling helices. OFFICINE MECCANICHE PAVESI & C. S.p.A. and MECBAR S.p.A. 24 April, 1969 [1 Aug., 1968], No. 21104/69. Headings B3A and B2E. A method of winding a coil comprises winding successive turns of a coil on a former having at least one axially tapered outer peripheral surface so shaped that the tension in the wire causes the turns formed on the former to be displaced axially over the tapered surface towards its narrowest part, causing the turns to pass from the former to a coil transfer or inserting tool. A tubular mandrel 22 is located within a mandrel 21, to which it is splined, and the wire 6a passes through the mandrel 22 to a rotary winding flyer 7 which is connected to the mandrel 21 for rotation therewith. The former 5<SP>1</SP> is positioned axially with the required tapered portion disposed so as to receive wire from the flyer. The mandrels are then rotated to drive the flyer and as the turns are formed they slide on to rods 10 of a transfer tool 9 mounted on a rotary head 36. Successive concentric coils are wound by advancing the former 5<SP>1</SP> and mandrel 22 by means of an actuator 27. When the winding is completed, expelling rods 14 are advanced by an actuator 28 and the last turns on the former 5<SP>1</SP> are pushed on to the transfer tool 9. The former is retracted together with the rods 14 by the actuator 27 and the tool 9 is indexed through an angle corresponding to the angular separation of adjacent sets of rods 10, which corresponds with the number of coils of the stator, whereupon a further set of coils is wound. On completion of a full revolution of the tool 9, the wire 6a is severed and the head 36 rotated through 180 degrees to bring a transfer tool 9<SP>1</SP> into the working position, while the windings are removed from the tool 9. The former may be provided with only one tapered surface where groups of coils are not required. A ferrule (16) may be provided on one of the rods 14, which, when extended by advancing the rods half a step, catches the wire of the last turn and thus allows winding to proceed in the opposite direction, Fig. 5 (not shown).
