Extrusion machines. - Tubes of metal or plastic material are formed by an extrusion press in which during formation a rotary movement is imparted to the fluid material by arranging helical grooves or projections on the core or mandrel, on the face of the die, or in the die itself, or on all of these, the resultant tube or rod being formed in some cases with corresponding grooves, or projections which may be internal or external, and, according to the present invention, the. core is cooled by water or air. As shown in Fig. 1, a heated and pierced metal billet or the like is placed in a container 1, and the metal is shaped by squirting through a die 2 by means of a power-actuated piston 3 to which is attached a core or mandrel 4 formed with helical projections 9. The core is formed hollow, and is cooled by circulating water or air supplied by a pipe 8. Helical projections 11 are formed on the conical face 5 of the die 2, but the die orifice 6 is plain. As shown in Fig. 3, the conical face 5 of the die is plain, and helical grooves 10 are formed in the die orifice 6 which give external ribs to the finished articles. The die 2 may be formed in two separate parts, and various forms of die 2 may be fitted in one container. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the application of the invention to the formation of rods. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
