Abstract

[Also in Divisions A4, B8 and F2] A mobile storage facility comprises three or more storage structures 23, 24, 25-29, Fig. 1, movable along a track 36, e.g. on rollers 38, Fig. 5, the end structures 23, 24 having oppositely moving drive means, e.g. the pneumatic cylinder PC1, Fig. 3, connected to the structure and its piston rod 52 connected to a fixed floor portion 56, whereby the structures may be moved together as in Fig. 1 or pulled apart to form an access aisle between a selected two structures determined by the selective uncoupling of coupling means 57-62 between the structures. The coupling means may be wholly manually operated or comprise a pneumatic cylinder e.g. LC1 on structure 23, Fig. 4, operating callipers 63 engaging a bolt 64 on structure 25, an emergency manual operating means being provided at 101, 94, 98, 102 and pull handle 103. A coupling actuator 93, 104, 106, 107 is carried by alternate structures connected by flexible hoses to a pneumatic circuit device 115 fixed in the floor and from which hoses lead to the drive means. To select an aisle e.g.. between 23 and 25, a button valve OB1, Fig. 4, is pressed to allow cylinder LC1 to open and uncouple callipers 63, the other couplings remaining connected, after which the circuit at 115 allows the drive means to be actuated to pull the two portions of structures apart to form the aisle. Should pneumatic tubes 108, Fig. 3, on the outer ends of the outer structure encounter an obstacle, a pneumatic signal sent to circuit 115 reverses the drive means and closes the structure. Similarly, if tubes 107 facing the aisle meet obstruction during closing, the drive means opens the structures. The aisle is closed by depressing valve buttom CB1 which closes callipers 63 which snap over bolt 61 due to return spring action of cylinder LC1 when the drive means push the structures together.
