Abstract
1,212,982. Automatic control of aircraft. SPERRY RAND Ltd. Feb.20, 1968 [Feb.22, 1967], No.8376/67. Heading G3R. In a system in which an aircraft is caused to follow a predetermined flight path by automatic control of throttle and elevator, engine thrust is also varied automatically in dependence on a timelagged forward acceleration signal. As applied to an aircraft which is being automatically controlled to maintain a constant altitude or to follow a glide path, airspeed is maintained constant by a signal from an airspeed meter 15, Fig.2, which controls an engine throttle servo 11 through a long term proportional plus integral controller. Short term variations of forward speed, e.g. due to gusts, are detected by a longitudinal accelerometer 12, signals from which are compensated for the effect of change of pitch by subtracting signals from a gyro vertical 16 so that true acceleration signals are delayed at 18 and applied in direct proportional to throttle servo 11 to increase thrust and correct a fall in altitude due to a following wind, for example. Signals from gyro 16 in response to pitch altitude changes are also effective to control throttle servo 11 through a circuit 19 having a smaller delay. Systems without speed or altitude control are referred to.
