Abstract

1,212,620. Discharge treatment of plastics.ETHYL CORP. 15 Oct., 1968, No. 48780/68. Heading H1X. An electrode for use in apparatus for the treatment of plastics material comprises a tubular member 21 and a cylindrical member 29 in slidable engagement within one end of the tubular member so that the overall length of the electrode may be adjusted, the members being provided with means whereby they may be fixedly positioned relative to one another, and being provided with ridges 22, 30 on their outer surfaces such that the electrode as a whole is of substantially constant external contour along its length. Aluminium tubes 29 sliding in the ends of an aluminium tube 21 are fixed in position by thumb-screws engaging threaded openings 26 in pairs of lugs 25 secured at the opposite sides of seats in the ends of tube 21. The ridges 22 are provided by a helica<SP>1</SP> screw thread, and the ridges 30 are provided by helical springs anchored at their ends to the tubes 29 and 21 by clamps 31. The electrode is supported by members 19 in an apparatus (Fig. 1, not shown) comprising an earthed rotatable cylindrical electrode over which the plastics film to be treated is passed. The members 19 are threaded to enable the spacing between the electrodes to be adjusted. The rotatable electrode may have a dielectric covering. A modified electrode (Fig. 4, not shown) comprises a central spring-covered tube sliding in the ends of two outer threaded tubes.
