Abstract

1,212,588. Charging batteries. R. HIRSCHMANN. 21 March, 1968 [23 March, 1967], No. 13765/68. Heading H2H. In a device for charging accumulators, the charging current flows through the collectoremitter path of a transistor. When the accumulator is fully charged, current is able to flow through a Zener diode and a second transistor arranged in such a way that the first transistor ceases to be conductive, so stopping the charging process. An accumulator A is charged through a resistance R 1 and a transistor T 1 . During charging, the base of the transistor T 1 is kept at a voltage U 1 derived from a potentiometer R 2 R 3 and stabilized by a Zener diode Z 1 . The voltage U 1 is greater than the maximum value of the accumulator voltage U A . When U A reaches this maximum voltage, a second Zener diode Z 2 connected to a potentiometer R 4 , is arranged to break down and feed current to the base of a second transistor T 2 . A current can now flow through the collector-emitter path of the transistor T 2 and through a resistance R 6 , which has the effect of lowering the voltage at the base of the first transistor T 1 at least to the value of the accumulator voltage so that charging through the transistor T 1 is stopped. A resistance R 7 , connected across the transistor T 1 , allows a very low charging current to pass in order to compensate for leakage from the fully charged accumulator. A condenser C 1 or C 2 may be included in the circuit in order to ensure that the initial current flows through the transistor T 1 rather than through T 2 , and the resistance R 1 may include an indicating glow lamp.
