Abstract

1,212,579. Preparation of ortho-alkylphenols. TAKASGO PERFUMERY CO. Ltd. 17 Dec., 1968 [5 Sept., 1968], No. 60005/68. Heading C2C. A process for preparing an ortho-alkylphenol comprises reacting a phenol with an olefin in the presence of a catalyst which has been prepared by adding to an alumina (preferably Y-alumina) at least one metallic sulphate represented by one of the formulµ: M<SP>1</SP> 2 SO 4 wherein M<SP>1</SP> represents a monovalent metallic ion other than ions of alkali metals, M 2 SO 4 wherein M<SP>2</SP> represents a divalent metallic ion other than the ions of alkaline earth metals, M<SP>3</SP> 2 (SO 4 ) 3 wherein M<SP>3</SP> represents a trivalent metallicion, or M<SP>4</SP>(SO 4 ) 2 wherein M<SP>4</SP> represents a tetravalent metallic ion. The examples describe the preparation of 6 - isopropyl - 3 - methylphenol, 2 - isopropylphenol and 6 - t. - butyl - 3 - methylphenol.
