Abstract
121,245. Crowe, E., and South Durham Steel & Iron Co. April 15, 1918. Sliding valves; temperature, regulating; leakage, preventing.-In a furnace valve or damper of the water-cooled type the damper frame B is made with a water-circulating chamber 1, and with a machined inclined face 4 on which the damper rests, and also with hand-holes and covers 6 for facilitating inspection &c., of the chamber 1. The hollow water-cooled damper A has its front and back faces 7, 8 dished to lessen the expansion strains, and has cleaning-openings and doors 9. Water is introduced by the pipes 20 and leaves through the hollow valve spindle 16 and the pipe 21. The hood D has machined guides 15 for the lip 12 on the upper end of the damper, and is closed at the top and front by covers 10, 11. The opening in the cover 10 is made gas and air tight by a floating ring 18 secured by clips. The damper is raised and lowered by gear attached to a frame secured to a divided ring 22 on the tube 16. A bridge plate or shield E supports the brickwork above the damper, and in front of this is a man-hole F. When the damper reaches its closed position, the lip 12 rests upon a ledge 13, and there is left below the valve a dust-collecting space 14.
