Abstract
1,211,633. Laminates. MONSANTO CO. 11 Jan., 1968, No. 1747/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] Laminates comprise fibrous boron with an aromatic polyimide binder (see Division C3). The boron fibres usually have a core of metal or metal boride e.g. W, Ta, Mb or Ti. The boron fibres may be used alone or with other fibres in filament, mat or woven form e.g. a cloth may be woven from a bundle of 2 to 15 boron filaments wound or braided with nylon or polyester or a warp of boron fibres may be woven with a weft of glass fibres. Other fibres mentioned are carbon, silica, silicon carbide or boron nitride. Laminµ of boron fibres may be mixed with laminµ of other fibres e.g. 3 to 30 plies may be formed of glass fibre alternating with or having only the top and bottom layers of boron fibres. In forming the laminates a substrate comprising fibrous boron may have deposited thereon a liquid mixture of a polyimide forming tetracarboxy compound and diamine and solvent and heated to form a prepolymer on the substrate. The so-formed material may be laminated with itself or with other fibrous material similarly coated with prepolymer under pressure at below 500‹ C. e.g. 10 to 10,000 p.s.i. and 150‹ to 350‹ C.
