Abstract

1,211,583. Gas turbine &c combustion apparatus. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. May 12, 1969 [May 16, 1968], No.23298/68. Heading F1L. A flame stabilizing device, e.g. for the re-heat or by-pass ducts of a gas turbine jet propulsion engine, comprises a V-section nose portion 1 having downstream extending limbs 2 to which are riveted bi-metallic plates 3, 4. The latter each comprise one sheet of a nickel based alloy having a relatively high coefficient of expansion and one sheet of a refractory metal having a significantly lower coefficient, e.g. niobium or molybdenum. The sheets may have an oxidation resistant coating. The plates 3, 4 are arranged such that for minimum resistance they extend parallel to the gas flow past the stabilizer when there is no combustion adjacent thereto, but when combustion is initiated they move out into the stabilizing position shown dotted. A tube 5 can provide a pilot fuel supply through holes 6 to the interior of the stabilizer for combustion with air entering through holes 7. Additional fuel is supplied through nozzles 8. Stops may be provided to limit the deflection of the free ends of the plates 3, 4. Several stabilizers may be arranged in parallel, radial or grid formations to give the required duct coverage.
