Abstract

1,211,309. Sulphur; removing H 2 S from gases. INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS. 23 Oct., 1968 [24 Oct., 1967], No. 50289/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division B1] Hydrogen sulphide and mercaptans are removed from gas mixtures containing them by passage at 10-80‹ C. through an organic solvent containing by weight of the liquid phase 0À01- 15%, preferably 0À1-1%, iodine and 0-30%, preferably 0-10%, water. Suitable organic solvents include sulphoxides, alkylene and polyalkylene glycols or the ethers and esters thereof, and liquid aromatic hydrocarbons. In examples, triethylene glycol monoethyl ether, dimethyl sulphoxide, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether monoacetate, polyethylene glycol (400), o-xylene, diethylene glycol, tripropylene glycol (1,3), and tetrabutylene glycol (1,4) monobutyl ether are the solvents employed. When the oxidizing power of the iodine is exhausted, it may be restored by treating the absorbent solution with hydrogen peroxide, ozone or sodium hypochlorite, or by electrolytically or catalytically oxidizing the solution.
