Abstract

1,210,970. Extrusion head for melt extruding films and other sheet material. MINIGRIP EUROPE A/S. 14 Oct., 1968 [14 Oct., 1967], No. 48638/68. Headings B5A and B5B. An extrusion head for the continuous melt extrusion of plastics sheet material (such as flat and tubular films) provided with two longitudinal profiled ribs shaped for subsequent interengagement with one another is provided with an extrusion gap between two parts of the head for forming the sheet material or film and, at the extrusion face, a shaped slot for forming each of the profiled ribs during extrusion of the sheet or film, and a feed duct extending in one of the parts of the head between each shaped slot and a point in the extrusion gap upstream of the extrusion face, the inlet to the feed duct at the point where it opens into the extrusion gap being adapted to be reduced in cross-section. As shown in Fig. 2, an extrusion head for producing a tubular film comprises an outer annular part 22 in which an inner core 24 is inserted centrally. Parts 22 and 24 are spaced apart to form a main extrusion duct 26 of annular cross-section to which molten plastics material is supplied from an extruder via ducts 34 and 32, a perforated wall 28 and a duct 30. The upper duct portion forms an extrusion gap, which immediately upstream of the extrusion face is in the form of a cylindrical gap portion 29. Arranged at the upper end of the core 24 at angular spacing from one another are two feed ducts 40, 42 which open towards the end face of the core 24. These feed ducts communicate with the cylindrical portion 29 of the extrusion gap. The nozzle core is covered by a die plate 48 which, as shown in Fig. 3, comprises shaping slots 50 and 52 respectively for the shaping of the profiled ribs 12 and 14 of the tubular film 10 shown in Fig. 1. The slots are situated above the feed ducts 40 and 42 and thereby communicate with the cylindrical gap portion 29. Compressed air for the inflation of the tubular film issuing from the blowing head is introduced into the tubular film through the conduit 60 and the duct 58 extending through the core 24. As shown in Fig. 4, the feed ducts 40, 42 comprise an inlet portion 62 the diameter of which is substantially equal to the gap width (a) of the cylindrical gap portion 29 and is substantially smaller than the diameter of the outlet portion 64 of the feed duct. The inlet 68 of the inlet portions 62 of the feed ducts is adapted to be reduced in cross-section, and for this purpose the core 24 is formed at least in the region of the inlet portion of the feed ducts of a deformable material, e.g. tool steel, aluminium, copper or brass, so that, for example by means of a rounded drift, it is possible to upset the edge of the inlet portions of the feed ducts, as indicated at 70, and thus reduce the cross-section of the inlet 68 to the desired extent.
