Abstract

1,210,887. Bending and tempering glass sheets. LIBBEY - OWENS - FORD GLASS CO. 15 June, 1968, No. 28622/68. Heading C1M. In a method of bending and tempering glass sheets in which a sheet is supported on an outline mould of desired curvature into conformity with which its sags when heated to its softening point, the mould and the heated, bent sheet thereon are advanced along a substantially horizontal path through a tempering area with the trailing edge 22 of the shaping surface and sheet elevated above the leading edge 27 so that no point along the line of intersection of the sheet with a vertical plane parallel to said path is lower than the point of intersection of that plane at the leading edge and blasts of cooling air are downwardly directed against the upper surface of the glass sheet to avoid creation of a stagnant pocket of air adjacent the upper surface. The outline shaping mould has an upwardly directed shaping surface 29 with the leading and trailing edges 27, 22 curved convexly and the sideedges 25, 26 curved concavely. The mould is located on a carriage 15 by members 39 and mounting rods 37. The members 39 have bifurcated arms 40 pivotally received on posts 41 fixed to plates 42 on the carriage. The mounting rods 37 are free to turn within members 39. The angle of inclination of the mould is adjustably set by a bolt and nut assembly 44-48 (Fig. 8) beneath the trailing and leading edges 22, 27. When correctly inclined, downwardly directed cooling blasts flow across the sheet surface from the trailing to the leading edge.
