Abstract
1,210,120. Hydrocracking. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 24 Dec., 1968 [27 Dec., 1967], No. 61239/68. Heading C5E. A process for making lower boiling hydrocarbons from residual oils comprises contacting the residual with a deasphalting solvent, subjecting the deasphalted oil to hydrogenative cracking and the asphaltic compounds to partial combustion with an O 2 -containing gas to obtain H2 which provides some at least of the H 2 for the cracking step and optionally for an earlier refining step for the deasphalted oil. If oil boiling higher than gasoline is obtained from the cracking, it may be passed to the partial combustion step, acting, e.g. as diluent for asphaltenes from the deasphalting step. Whatever use the H 2 is put to, it should be first purified, and any soot thus obtained may be pellitized with oil and returned to the partial combustion step, to which steam and/or CO 2 may be delivered.
