Abstract

A threshold dosimeter for use in the megarad range includes an indicator dyestuff, a watersoluble organic halogen compound, and a watersoluble buffer, embedded in a transparent base of polyvinyl alcohol. Preferably, methyl orange is used as indicator, chloral hydrate as the halogen compound, and sodium tetraborate as the buffer; for these materials, a sharp colour change occurs at a dose which may be adjusted between 0À5 and 10 M rad by choice of the chloral hydrate and sodium tetraborate content. The dosimeter, in the form of a foil, is produced by evaporating aqueous solutions of the components on a siliconized support in air.
