Abstract

1,209,522. Analogue/digital converters. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 18 Jan., 1968 [23 Jan., 1967], No. 2695/68. Heading G4H. A decoder having a characteristic curve comprising straight line segments, the slopes of consecutive segments being in a 2 to 1 ratio, e.g. the decoder of Specification 1,154,828, is included in the feedback loop of a non-linear coder in which the feedback signal from the decoder is compared with a signal representing the analogue input in a comparator 2 (Fig. 3), controlling logic circuitry 11 connected to the decoder. The decoder comprises a register RG (Fig. 2) for a seven bit number, the first bit BI of which represents the polarity, a decoder ZD which converts digits B1-B4 to a signal on the one of fourteen lines CM , C<SP>11</SP>... C<SP>17</SP>, CP, C<SP>11</SP>2... C<SP>11</SP>7, this signal opening an associated gate P<SP>1</SP>I ... P<SP>11</SP>7 to determine the point of injection of a current, the value of which depends on the three least significant bits B5-B7 conarolling constant current generators G2-G4 tnd bits B2-B4 controlling via OR gate 1 a constant current generator G1, into one or other of two identical ladder networks SN, SP. The voltage across AB represents the number in register RG, the contents of which are controlled by the logic circuitry 11 so that first the polarity bits B1 is determined and then successive bits B2-B7 of the register are switched in until coincidence between the input signal and the output of the decoder is achieved.
