Abstract

1,209,319. Toothpaste. ANNELIESE SCHELLER [trading as DR. SCHELLER DURODONT], 20 Dec.. 1967, No. 57936/67. Heading A5B. A foaming storage-stable toothpaste based on an alcohol-containing, gel thickened to paste consistency with colloidal silica, having a water content of not more than 10% by weight (based on the weight of the toothpaste), contains a mixture of at least one physiologically acceptable peroxide compound or persalt and/or at least one carbonate or bicarbonate with at least one physiologically acceptable acid salt of an inorganic and/or organic acid, which salts are present in an amount such that in use the toothpaste has initially an acid reaction (but not more acid than pH 5). According to a preferred procedure, the toothpaste may he prepared by dissolving the organic acid in not more than 2 to 3 times its weight of alcohol and then reacting it in an excess of glycerol with a slight excess of the cationyielding compound over that required to yield the acid salt while heating the mixture and thereafter incorporating in the resultant suspension of the acid salt the other constituents of the toothpaste. The acid salts may be those of edible acids such as the alkaline earth metal (e.g. Ca or Mg) salts of malic, citric, tartaric, Pactic and/or of phosphorus acids, e.g. orno-, pyro-, hexameta- and polyphosphoric acids, a preferred compound being disodium pyrophosphate. The peroxide compound may be an alkaline earth metal peroxide or a water-soluble per compound (with the water content limited to a maximum of 6% by wt. of the toothpaste), e.g. sodium perborate, sodium pyrophosphate peroxohydrate or carbamide peroxide. The alcohol present may be ethanol and/or propanol, preferably n-propanol. The toothpaste may also contain glycerol and/or propylene glycol and the colloidal silica may be present as a mixture of particles of sizes 4 to 20 millimicrons and 35 to 40 microns. The toothpaste may contain 2.5 to 10% by weight of the physiologically acceptable acid salts, up to 5% by weight of the per compound, 20 to 50% by weight of alcohol, 15 to 40% by weight of glycerol and/ or propylene glycol, the weights being based on the weight of the toothpaste, and an excess of alkaline earth metal carbonate over that required for total reaction with the acid salt. The toothpaste may contain other conventional excipients.
