Abstract

1,209,168. Automatic voltage control. LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc. Nov. 17, 1967 [Dec. 2, 1966], No. 52534/67. Heading G3R. [Also in Division H3] The on and off transitions of a switch used in a voltage stabilizer are effected in response to the turn-on of one and the other respectively of the amplifying elements of a multi-vibrator having a diode in one of its cross-coupling paths. The turn-on is used since this is faster than the turnoff and the diode may be used to isolate the one output circuit of the multi-vibration from the other. In the D. C. supply circuit shown the output is stabilized by controlling the on-off ratio of a series switch transistor 12. This transistor is switched on by the switch-on of transistor 52 of a multivibrator 50, 52 and is switched off by an inverter 64 controlled by the switch-on of transistor 50, diode 62 isolating one circuit from the other. A bias capacitor charges negatively from 74 when 12 is off and the charge is used to assist conduction of 12 when 64 is switched on. Stabilization of the output voltage is effected by comparing in unit 28 the output voltage at 22 with a reference voltage at 34 derived from the output side (or the input side, Fig. 2 not shown) of switch 12. When the output voltage is within a given range the multi-vibrator free runs and a regular clipping of the supply occurs. Outside this range one or other of the multi-vibrator transistors is held conducting until the voltage is within the range. The output is smoothed by a filter 16, 20, 21 and free-wheeling diode 18. Either of terminals 22 or 23 may be earthed so as to provide a positive or negative supply at the other.
