Abstract

[Also in Division G1] A belt conveyer for passing a succession of articles (not shown) over a weighing or other sensitive platform 14 comprises an endless carrier belt 22 for the articles and a drive belt 23, which is itself driven from a prime mover 31 and makes frictional engagement with portions of the underside of the carrier belt 22 leaving a portion of the operative run of the latter which passes over the said platform 14 unsupported and at a low tension which is substantially unaffected by articles carried on preceding and suceeding portions of the carrier belt. The drive belt 23 comprises a number of side-by-side belts 28 each carried on a respective finger-shaped member 16. The heights of the latter may be adjusted by adjusting the height of a support member 32 in slots in the framework. The weighing platform 14 comprises an assembly of members 19 which interleave with the fingers 16 and bear on a transducer 21. In addition to being driven by the belt 23, the belt 22 is driven by the action of a pinch roller 27 loaded by a spring 27<SP>1</SP> against the belt 22 at a point where it passes over its toothed drive roller 29 (Fig. 3). The belts may have a degree of mechanical drive interlock due to the effect of interengaging weave textures of the belts. By varying the angle of inclination of the fingers 16, and/or the inclination of the platform 14 the length of the unsupported zone of the belt 22 may be varied.
