Abstract

1,208,948. Multiplex radio signalling. C. A. MORCHAND. 31 May, 1968 [6 July, 1967; 13 Nov., 1967; 15 March, 1968], No. 26148/68. Heading H4L. Means are provided for transmitting special viewer information signals by substituting them for at least a part of selected frames of general viewer television signals. As shown, a television transmitter 10 transmits to a plurality of receivers 12, 14, 16, 19 and 25. Receiver 12 is for a special viewer who can call via line 36 for desired information from a store 24. Receiver 14 is for a special viewer receiving information from the store 24, receiver 16 is for a viewer watching the broadcast TV programme, receiver 19 provides a special viewer with a permanent copy of information from the store 24 and receiver 25 includes a persistent display device for a special viewer. The normal broadcast programme is transmitted from system 18 via combiner 20 and amplifier 22, and " start of field pulses " in the form of vertical sync. pulses or vertical blanking pulses are fed to a control circuit 28 which via line 38 selects periodically, or in response to a signal on line 36, a field of special programme material from the store 24. This selected information is fed to a buffer store 26 and when the transfer is completed, the next start-of-field pulse causes control 28 to cause combiner 20 to stop accepting signals from 18 and to accept signals from the buffer store 26. Control 28 also supplies a characteristic tone signal, different for each special programme, which is combined at 20 with the audio signal of the TV channel, but is outside the normal audio passband, and supplies a signal to buffer store 26 to start the read-out. The next startof-field pulse restores control 28 to its initial state. Receiver 14 is shown switched to receive the special signals and includes a decoder 414 which may be provided with several differently tuned circuits which may be switched so that one of several possible special programme sequences may be selected. When a characteristic tone is received the decoder sends a signal to control circuit 314 which erases any signals in a store 214 and opens the store for a fixed period to accept the forthcoming field of the special TV signal, after which the signals are supplied to the display device 114. Receiver 12 is similar to receiver 14 but has the additional facility of transmitting a call signal from device 120 via line or other link 36, the device 120 also controlling decoder 412. The control 28 may be arranged to signal back via line 36 the number of start-of-field signals which will occur before transmission of the desired signal.
